Shoulder Plastic Surgery

Shoulder plastic surgery is not as common as procedures to repair a broken arm or a breast augmentation, but it can be useful for people who have lost some of their range of motion due to injury or arthritis. Many patients who undergo shoulder replacement surgery to correct damaged cartilage regain about two-thirds of their normal movement. Some regain less than this amount, depending on the extent of damage and whether the soft tissues around the joint were also damaged. Patients who receive physical therapy both while they are in the hospital and after they are released from the hospital have a much better chance of regaining most of their shoulder movement.어깨필러시술

The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket type of joint. The round end of the upper arm bone, called the humerus, fits into the cup-shaped part of the shoulder blade (the socket). Ligaments and tendons hold the bones together. Cartilage keeps the bones from rubbing against each other as you move your shoulder. If the smooth surface of the cartilage is worn away, the joints can rub against each other and cause pain.

During the procedure, your doctor will give you general anesthesia and a nerve block to put you to sleep. A nurse will check your vital signs as you begin to wake up. After the surgical team is sure you can breathe on your own, they will remove the nerve block and give you more medication to control pain.

Your surgeon will make a small hole, about the size of a buttonhole, in your shoulder. They will insert a tube into this opening and use a camera to look at the joint. Then, your surgeon will make other smaller cuts in your shoulder and insert tiny instruments to repair the damaged cartilage and muscle. Once the surgeon repairs the joint, they will close the incisions and cover them with a dressing.

Most patients need to stay in the hospital for a day or so. During this time, the doctors will monitor you closely for signs of infection and other complications. You will be given antibiotics to help prevent infection and pain medications to control your discomfort. Some people can go home the same day as their surgery, but most need to stay overnight.

You may feel more comfortable if you have someone drive you home from the hospital. After you are discharged, a physical therapist will teach you how to do exercises to retrain your muscles and improve your shoulder’s range of motion. It is important that you find a physical therapist who specializes in working with shoulder problems and is familiar with this surgery.

You can usually get back most of your range of motion in about three to four months. But the results depend on your compliance with physical therapy. It’s best to start physical therapy as soon as possible after your operation so that you can build up your strength and flexibility before the shoulder becomes more active.닥터케빈의원
