The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College

Physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors, also called physiatrists, provide diagnosis, treatment and therapy for people who have medical conditions that cause disability. They also do research to advance the field of rehabilitation.

Our physicians at Mayo Clinic locations in Arizona, Florida and Rochester, Minnesota work closely with a team of experts to help you recover from injury or surgery.

Research

Medical research is one of the foundations of our department, which advances our mission to prevent and treat disability. Our faculty perform translational and transdisciplinary research that is designed to develop effective rehabilitative strategies to improve function, recovery and quality of life.

Our experts investigate a broad range of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and spinal cord injury conditions that may affect functional outcomes. They also study how to best assess and predict risk of disability, as well as develop methods for evaluating the level of function that patients have achieved in their rehabilitation.

In addition, our physiatrists work to promote international relations through academic exchange and collaborative research projects with colleagues abroad. For example, the department hosts a visiting professor from Fujita Health University in Japan every year. Our faculty is also involved in educating the public about how to avoid disabling injuries and how to get the right treatment to help people return to their normal lives.

Education

Medical students from Weill Cornell Medical College rotate in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine during their fourth year. They explore a combination of inpatient and outpatient neurological, spinal cord injury, and physical medicine and rehabilitation experiences supplemented by standardized patient encounters and lectures led by the department’s full-time faculty.

The department is home to more than 30 full-time physiatrists, yielding an extremely favorable faculty-to-resident ratio. The department also has a full complement of dedicated and experienced physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, nurses, social workers and psychologists who are all involved in resident education.

Our faculty is committed to educating the public about avoiding disability and maximizing function. 잠실정형외과 They do this by partnering with Weill Cornell to conduct educational outreach programs including Spring Seminars for Patients, and they present at national conferences. They are also active in translational research that is designed to develop effective rehabilitative strategies. Ultimately, they seek to break new ground and push boundaries in the field of rehabilitation sciences so that everyone can live life to its fullest.

Clinical Care

You will treat a wide range of patients. Neurorehabilitation encompasses conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke and progressive neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis; spinal cord injury rehabilitation; musculoskeletal medicine, which includes chronic musculoskeletal disorders, and limb loss rehabilitation, which involves the care of patients with severe amputee problems. A significant proportion of your patients will have both a neurological condition such as a traumatic brain injury or a spinal cord injury together with a musculoskeletal problem such as an ankle injury.

A career in rehabilitation medicine is very satisfying and involves humanistic patient care. You will have plenty of variety in your work, which may include ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, best interest meetings, and outpatient clinics. In addition, you may have to take on call rotas in acute hospitals or nursing homes. You can train part time, if this is more suitable for your personal or family circumstances. The benefits of rehabilitation should be available to all people, whether through an accident or a health condition that leads to disability. This can be achieved by making it a core component of primary care, and delivering rehabilitation alongside other health interventions.하남재활의학과
