AIRBMP, Component 3 held Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) Results Workshop for Sub-Project 1

Ayeyarwady Integrated River Basin Management Project (AIRBMP), Component 3 organized the workshop for Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) Results Workshop for subproject 1, Pinya Hall at Hotel Marvel, Mandalay on 28th August 2017. At the Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) Results Workshop, welcoming speech by U Win Hlaing, Project Director of AIRBMP, Directorate of Water Resources & Improvement of River Systems (DWIR), Opening speech by Mr. Dung Anh Hoang, Senior Transportation Specialist, Work Bank and Introduction to Component 3 and Sub-Project 1 for Mandalay Waterway by U Aung Myo Khaing, Director of Component 3, AIRBMP. Presenting by Royal HaskoningDV (RHDHV) for the overview of modeling and proposed design options, description cards including Technical and Cost criteria, Presented by International Centre for Environmental Management (ICEM) for the baseline study and E&S inputs to description cards, Environmental and Social criteria and Weightings and Process.  The workshop objectives are to present the results of the MCA for the upstream and downstream scenarios, feedback on the process, comments and discussion of the MCA results, Identification of any additional technical, cost-benefit, environmental or social issues and outline next steps for preliminary design and the ESIA process. On the 29th August 2017 at Mandalay DWIR office, held Wrap Up meeting and discussed results of MCA and way forwards to develop detail design and budget.

Discussion session for System Integrator Phase I implementation

AIRBM Project, under Component 2, NIRAS consultant firm for System Integrator hold brain storming meeting on August 1, 2017 at Thingaha Hotel, Naypyitaw. Directors and Executive Engineers from DMH, Component 2 team, and Key Experts from NIRAS consultant firm  discussed the issues related with Weather forecasting process in FMI, Challenges for system integration and modernization, requirements for input in Phase I and  future investment in Phase II implementation.

System Integrator Inception Workshop in Nay Pyi Taw

The inception workshop was held on 27th June, 2017 at Multi Hazard Early Warning Center, Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Nay Pyi Taw, after one month of contract signing with NIRAS consultant firm. The international donor agencies, SI consultant firm members, AIRBM Project members and DMH government officials was attended the formal Inception and also join the informal technical discussion meeting at 28th June 2017.

AIRBM, Component 1 held SOBA Inception workshop

Ayeyarwady Integrated River Basin Management Project, Component 1 organized the meeting for State of Basin Assessment- SOBA Inception Workshop at MicaSa Hotel, Yangon on 19 and 20 June 2017. At the SOBA Inception workshop, welcome speech by U Htun Lwin Oo, Secretary of NWRC, Director General, Directorate of Water Resources & Improvement of River Systems (DWIR), Setting the scene for the SOBA Report, Ayeyarwady Basin Master Plan and Myanmar’s Water Sector Reform by Prof. Dr Khin Ni Ni Thein, AIRBM Component 1 Director, Hydro-Informatics Centre and presented by Mr Tarek Ketelsen, SOBA Coordinator, AWP Coordinator Update on the Ayeyarwady State of the Basin Assessment(SOBA) process and Report presented by Mr Tarek Ketelsen, SOBA Coordinator, AWP Coordinator. The objective of the SOBA Inception Workshop are to review and finalise the SOBA Package Scoping Reports, including workplan, key development and conservation issues to address, as well as the thematic and scheduling linkages between packages.

  1. Background

The Ayeyarwady State of the Basin Assessment (SOBA) is the first step towards the development of an integrated Ayeyarwady River Basin Master plan. SOBA is an integrated environmental, social and economic analysis of the past and present conditions in the Ayeyarwady basin that includes key processes that underpin the biophysical and socio-economic characteristics as well as a trend-based analysis of these characteristics. SOBA will be a major reference document for all development and conservation planners and managers working in the Ayeyarwady basin, it represents the first time that a comprehensive integrated baseline at the basin scale has been developed in recent decades.

In order to develop the SOBA Report, some 25 commercial, research and NGO organisations have been contracted through 10 contracts (Annex 1, Table 1). Grouped into six packages, the organisations bring together leading Myanmar and international expertise in specific aspects of the Ayeyarwady biophysical and socio-economic systems with more than 100 individual experts engaged and working on SOBA.

The Final SOBA Report will compile and synthesise information from each of the six packages into a high-quality reference product due December 2017.
